The Soprano Teardrop Walnut (STW) dulcimer is built with bookmatched solid walnut back and sides and a Western red cedar soundboard. The strings attach via bridge pins; this allows the player a certain flexibility in experimenting with different string gauges as ball end single strings are usually easy to obtain at your local music store. The dulcimer has a rosewood fingerboard overlay with mother of pearl position markers in frets 3, 7, and 10.
While it has the shorter scale length enabling the instrument to be tuned into the higher pitched keys, it still retains a warmth and mellowness due to the size of the body. It does not have a high "tinny" sound, but rather sounds like a well-balanced standard dulcimer tuned to the higher pitch.
The Soprano tunes into the key of G (G D G) and G C G with ease; it also allows you to retune in the keys of F, A, (in 1 - 5 - 1 tuning) and B, C, D, and E (out of 1-4-1 tuning).
